What is a mailing list?
A mailing list, like a UseNet newsgroup, provides a place for people to talk and ask questions about a given topic. Unlike UseNet, a mailing list uses e-mail to distribute messages. You send a message to the list address, which then gets e-mailed to all the list subscribers who read and respond to the list, etc. This list typically gets 10-40 messages daily. The advantages of WNYSOR over alt.rave or other newsgroups is a greater sense of community and a higher signal-to-noise ratio. The e-mail mechanism of WYNSOR also means that the list is available to virtually anyone with an Internet account, whereas UseNet groups are only available if one's ISP is willing to accept the feed.
The Purpose of the Wnysor Mailing List
The purpose of WNYSOR is to discuss various aspects of the rave (and club) scene within the WNYSO area. This includes culture, theories, music (and music making), event postings, reviews, and other things that people feel relate to the rave scene in one way or another. Although drugs are present in the rave scene, try and keep the drug discussion to a minimum as a number of people on WNYSOR are quite sober. (besides, parties are about dancing, not drugging)
Wnysor History
The Western New York and Southern Ontario Rave-Net has been in opperation since the fall of '93 when Brett Wallace decided somebody needed to do something about the lack of a scene in Buffalo (if you're perplexed about what I'm talking about check out the link to hyperreal.com for more info on raves). I believe it all started with a conversation we had on alt.rave about some iced tea : ) The list naturally covered Toronto too, as most people from Buffalo at the time had to travel there for parties. There was also no list which truly covered the Southern Ontario Region, as the NE-Raves list covered mostly the East Cost US Megalopolis, and already had enough volume. The list was run manually by Bret until the fall of '94 when I took it over and subsequently got it put on a listserver which Rich Peters had had set up. etc , etc, etc.....
Posting Guidelines and Rules
1) The list administrator will, at his own discression, kick people off the list for posts deemed inappropriate. People are generally given warnings first, but attitudes that compromise the vibe of the list will be curbed. Debating is encouraged, but flaming and personal attacks aren't. Make sure you keep debates to a factual level.
2) Please do not send files to the list such as pictures. It causes many problems with the listserver and errors because many people use mail servers like Juno, that do not support these kinds of files. If you would like to show a picture, post it on the web instead and mail the link to the list.
3) Before you post a very short one line or so message, please make sure it is nessecary. It can be annoying to download 50 one line pointless messages. It may be possible to redirect messages/questions to individuals instead.
4) Cross posting, etc, etc.....??? whatever else
